So, my father found this very interesting book written by Carlo M. Cipolla… in this book he analizes and explains the 5 basic laws of Human Stupidity… (

1 – The First Basic Law of human stupidity asserts without ambiguity that: “Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.”

At first, the statement sounds trivial, vague and horribly ungenerous. Closer scrutiny will however reveal its realistic veracity. No matter how high are one’s estimates of human stupidity, one is repeatedly and recurrently startled by the fact that:

a) people whom one had once judged rational and intelligent turn out to be unashamedly stupid.

b) day after day, with unceasing monotony, one is harassed in one’s activities by stupid individuals who appear suddenly and unexpectedly in the most inconvenient places and at the most improbable moments.

2 – The Second Basic Law states that: “The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.”

Cultural trends now fashionable in the West favour an egalitarian approach to life. People like to think of human beings as the output of a perfectly engineered mass production machine. Geneticists and sociologists especially go out of their way to prove, with an impressive apparatus of scientific data and formulations that all men are naturally equal and if some are more equal than others, this is attributable to nurture and not to nature. I take an exception to this general view. It is my firm conviction, supported by years of observation and experimentation, that men are not equal, that some are stupid and others are not, and that the difference is determined by nature and not by cultural forces or factors. One is stupid in the same way one is red-haired; one belongs to the stupid set as one belongs to a blood group. A stupid man is born a stupid man by an act of Providence. Although convinced that fraction of human beings are stupid and that they are so because of genetic traits, I am not a reactionary trying to reintroduce surreptitiously class or race discrimination. I firmly believe that stupidity is an indiscriminate privilege of all human groups and is uniformly distributed according to a constant proportion.

In this regard, Nature seems indeed to have outdone herself. It is well known that Nature manages, rather mysteriously, to keep constant the relative frequency of certain natural phenomena. For instance, whether men proliferate at the Northern Pole or at the Equator, whether the matching couples are developed or underdeveloped, whether they are black, red, white or yellow the female to male ratio among the newly born is a constant, with a very slight prevalence of males. We do not know how Nature achieves this remarkable result but we know that in order to achieve it Nature must operate with large numbers. The most remarkable fact about the frequency of stupidity is that Nature succeeds in making this frequency equal to the probability quite independently from the size of the group.

Thus one finds the same percentage of stupid people whether one is considering very large groups or one is dealing with very small ones. No other set of observable phenomena offers such striking proof of the powers of Nature.

The evidence that education has nothing to do with the probability was provided by experiments carried on in a large number of universities all over the world. One may distinguish the composite population which constitutes a university in five major groups, namely the blue-collar workers, the white-collar employees, the students, the administrators and the professors.

Whenever I analyzed the blue-collar workers I found that the fraction σ of them were stupid. As σ’s value was higher than I expected (First Law), paying my tribute to fashion I thought at first that segregation, poverty, lack of education were to be blamed. But moving up the social ladder I found that the same ratio was prevalent among the white-collar employees and among the students. More impressive still were the results among the professors. Whether I considered a large university or a small college, a famous institution or an obscure one, I found that the same fraction σ of the professors are stupid. So bewildered was I by the results, that I made a special point to extend my research to a specially selected group, to a real elite, the Nobel laureates. The result confirmed Nature’s supreme powers: σ fraction of the Nobel laureates are stupid.

This idea was hard to accept and digest but too many experimental results proved its fundamental veracity. The Second Basic Law is an iron law, and it does not admit exceptions. The Women’s Liberation Movement will support the Second Basic Law as it shows that stupid individuals are proportionately as numerous among men as among women. The underdeveloped of the Third World will probably take solace at the Second Basic Law as they can find in it the proof that after all the developed are not so developed. Whether the Second Basic Law is liked or not, however, its implications are frightening: the Law implies that whether you move in distinguished circles or you take refuge among the head-hunters of Polynesia, whether you lock yourself into a monastery or decide to spend the rest of your life in the company of beautiful and lascivious women, you always have to face the same percentage of stupid people – which percentage (in accordance with the First Law) will always surpass your expectations.

3 – The Third Basic Law assumes, although it does not state it explicitly, that human beings fall into four basic categories: the helpless, the intelligent, the bandit and the stupid.

If Tom takes an action and suffers a loss while producing a gain to Dick, Tom’s mark will fall in field H: Tom acted helplessly. If Tom takes an action by which he makes a gain while yielding a gain also to Dick, Tom’s mark will fall in area I: Tom acted intelligently. If Tom takes an action by which he makes a gain causing Dick a loss, Tom’s mark will fall in area B: Tom acted as a bandit. Stupidity is related to area S..

As the Third Basic Law explicitly clarifies: “A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.”

When confronted for the first time with the Third Basic Law, rational people instinctively react with feelings of skepticism and incredulity. The fact is that reasonable people have difficulty in conceiving and understanding unreasonable behaviour. But let us abandon the lofty plane of theory and let us look pragmatically at our daily life. We all recollect occasions in which a fellow took an action which resulted in his gain and our loss: we had to deal with a bandit. We also recollect cases in which a fellow took an action which resulted in his loss and our gain: we had to deal with a helpless person. We can recollect cases in which a fellow took an action by which both parties gained: he was intelligent. Such cases do indeed occur. But upon thoughtful reflection you must admit that these are not the events which punctuate most frequently our daily life. Our daily life is mostly, made of cases in which we lose money and/or time and/or energy and/or appetite, cheerfulness and good health because of the improbable action of some preposterous creature who has nothing to gain and indeed gains nothing from causing us embarrassment, difficulties or harm. Nobody knows, understands or can possibly explain why that preposterous creature does what he does. In fact there is no explanation – or better there is only one explanation: the person in question is stupid.

The Power Of Stupidity…

It is not difficult to understand how social, political and institutional power enhances the damaging potential of a stupid person. But one still has to explain and understand what essentially it is that makes a stupid person dangerous to other people – in other words what constitutes the power of stupidity.

Essentially stupid people are dangerous and damaging because reasonable people find it difficult to imagine and understand unreasonable behaviour. An intelligent person may understand the logic of a bandit. The bandit’s actions follow a pattern of rationality: nasty rationality, if you like, but still rationality. The bandit wants a plus on his account. Since he is not intelligent enough to devise ways of obtaining the plus as well as providing you with a plus, he will produce his plus by causing a minus to appear on your account. All this is bad, but it is rational and if you are rational you can predict it. You can foresee a bandit’s actions, his nasty manoeuvres and ugly aspirations and often can build up your defenses.

With a stupid person all this is absolutely impossible as explained by the Third Basic Law. A stupid creature will harass you for no reason, for no advantage, without any plan or scheme and at the most improbable times and places. You have no rational way of telling if and when and how and why the stupid creature attacks. When confronted with a stupid individual you are completely at his mercy. Because the stupid person’s actions do not conform to the rules of rationality, it follows that:

a) one is generally caught by surprise by the attack; b) even when one becomes aware of the attack, one cannot organize a rational defense, because the attack itself lacks any rational structure.

The fact that the activity and movements of a stupid creature are absolutely erratic and irrational not only makes defense problematic but it also makes any counter-attack extremely difficult – like trying to shoot at an object which is capable of the most improbable and unimaginable movements. This is what both Dickens and Schiller had in mind when the former stated that “with stupidity and sound digestion man may front much” and the latter wrote that “against stupidity the very Gods fight in vain.”

4 – The Fourth Basic Law states that: “Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.”

One is tempted to believe that a stupid man will only do harm to himself but this is confusing stupidity with helplessness. On occasion one is tempted to associate oneself with a stupid individual in order to use him for one’s own schemes. Such a manoeuvre cannot but have disastrous effects because a) it is based on a complete misunderstanding of the essential nature of stupidity and b) it gives the stupid person added scope for the exercise of his gifts. One may hope to outmanoeuvre the stupid and, up to a point, one may actually do so. But because of the erratic behaviour of the stupid, one cannot foresee all the stupid’s actions and reactions and before long one will be pulverized by the unpredictable moves of the stupid partner.

Through centuries and millennia, in public as in private life, countless individuals have failed to take account of the Fourth Basic Law and the failure has caused mankind incalculable losses.

5 – The Fifth Basic Law states that: “A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.”

The corollary of the Law is that: “A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.”

The result of the action of a perfect bandit is purely and simply a transfer of wealth and/or welfare. After the action of a perfect bandit, the bandit has a plus on his account which plus is exactly equivalent to the minus he has caused to another person. The society as a whole is neither better nor worse off. If all members of a society were perfect bandits the society would remain stagnant but there would be no major disaster. The whole business would amount to massive transfers of wealth and welfare in favour of those who would take action. If all members of the society would take action in regular turns, not only the society as a whole but also individuals would find themselves in a perfectly steady state of no change.

When stupid people are at work, the story is totally different. Stupid people cause losses to other people with no counterpart of gains on their own account. Thus the society as a whole is impoverished.

Insurance Companies: my experience and conclusions…

Insurance, especially car insurance are obligatory now a days. All goes well until you have a big accident.

In my experience as a driver, I had a run over, a hit and run and 2 big losses (insurance was a full coverage plan). Next I will explain each case and how it was handled by the insurance company.

1. A drunken girl ran out to the street i was driving by, she rolled over my windshield and broke it with her butt. Police and the insurance guy did all the paperwork and took pictures. The next day, I was offered legal services (included in my insurance plan) to represent me in court, I won. All went well, however when I claimed for the windshield replacement, the insurance company simply told me that they will not pay for it. I had to take money out of my pocket to pay for the new windshield, but also had to pay the insurance $300.00 fee for their assistance which was never returned to me when the case was closed as they told me.

2. Hit and Run: After having dinner in a restaurant, when i got to the car i noticed that the rear bumper was falling, the tire was completely destroyed, and the whole right side of the car was just a mess, including the door. In the building where my car was parked outside, some guys saw what happened and came down to assist me and give me the pictures they took of the garbage truck that had hit my car and was gone a few minutes later.

When i went to the Insurance company, the fee i had to pay was 700.00. It took them more than a month to send me the tow truck to pick up my car and take it to the repair shop to fix it. MORE THAN A MONTH. The lawyer was visiting the offices of the Trash Authority (Autoridad de Aseo), yet he never found the truck that hit me. How is it possible that you can not see records of what truck worked that day, on a night shift in that area? The trucks have no registration plate number, however, they have some numbers painted the red which distinguish them (those numbers appear in the photos given by the witnesses), to which people in their office said that it is not a license plate number and they cannot find the truck. After several months of dealing with this nonsense mess, neither the insurance company nor their lawyer could do anything. Within months the car was fixed and returned to me, and months later I suffered a big accident, lost the car and they had to pay me the the sum insured.

3. When i bought another car, I got a full coverage plan with other company, Payed the whole year in advance ($960.00).

When I suffered another big accident on a sunday night crashing into a truck that was parked in a curve without any lights (police sanctioned the owner), the ambulance took me to the hospital and the car was taken to a lot owned by police. When I recovered from my injuries, I went to the insurance company to deal with the case and it was another nonsense adventure to get my car out of that lot and take it to one of the company lots with their tow truck. I had to pay all the expenses for the days the car was there (approx. 70.00), the insurance did not covered it. From there, the car was declared a total loss, the process was long and tedious, I was treated like I was guilty, they did all the research trying not to pay me the sum insured. When they were proven that it was not my fault, it took them 3 months to pay me. The car had used only six months of the insurance but they did not return me the other six months of the insurance that i had paid and would not need anymore, and still i had to pay another fee for assistance. Lesson learned: Never pay full year in advance.

4. Currently I have another car which is insured with a third company, full coverage that costed me 1,000 which i have been paying every 2-3 months. As my payment method was different this time, sometimes payed a couple of months in advance, another month i was late, i went to their office one day and asked them if it was ok to be late for a month cause i was planning to pay the rest of the insurance the next month, they told me not to worry, as long as it was completely payed by the month it expires. A week later, I started receiving calls from my broker and the company claiming that I was late in paying and the insurance will be suspend and then cancelled. I explained what I had been told in their offices but both, the company and and the broker cleaned their hands telling me that I was the one who had misunderstood everything. I have never been sent an account statement or monthly email reminder as other companies do. This month this insurance finally expires.

Conclusions: I decided to hire another company, the minimum insurance required by law which will cost me only 150.00 per year, driving carefully and parking in safe places. If I have an accident, I prefer to assume the costs that will be lower than the full-coverage plan and their fees together, and most importantly, the process would not be so stressful and would be much faster.

The Importance of speaking Different Languages

Today, speaking more than one language opens many doors, both in the workplace and in social and personal environment, but many still do not understand it. Being multilingual has become necessary if you want to succeed, especially in business.

English is considered the most important language in the world, but Spanish, Arabic, French, Chinese, Russian and German are taking more and more strength.

In Panama, the culture of learning languages is so poor ??because they think they don’t need it, but when it comes to looking for a job, the reality is that at least being fluent in English is required.

It is easier to learn languages when you are a child because you are able to absorb more information, but as one grows older, it becomes more difficult.

When I hear someone says “I do not have the facility for languages ??like you,” I take it as a cheap excuse and laziness to spend time to learn, because I know many people that even speaking with very strong accent they, in extreme situations have learned to speak a language to survive in another country. Unacceptable excuse.

In my experience, to learn a language you first need to know which language is a priority for your daily business or social relationships, and not to pick it up random, because otherwise if you don’t practice it, you will forget it and that represents waste of time and money. In my case, I have three options that interest me; German, French and Arabic. I chose Arabic as a priority for me since I socialize a lot with Lebanese people and for my business it will be a big plus in the future since I intend to get into the Arab market when Arab Emirates starts flying into Panama.

Tourism websites claim that over 50% of Panamanians speak English. In my 21 years living here, i could tell that not even 10% speak it. Every single day I help translate simple questions of foreigners who do not speak Spanish.

This is where comes another situation to excuse the laziness to learn … “If they come to this country, they must learn the language spoken here.” Really? Unlike many foreigners I know here, they have made the effort and still do it to learn Spanish because they don’t want it to be difficult socializing on the streets, but local people, on the other side, rather than using the situation and learn English or another language, are enclosed in this bubble of laziness and ignorance because they think they are doing fine.

Conclusion: If you want to succeed and be proud of it, open your mind and spend a little time to learn something as essential as it is to learn another language.

Crime and childbirth with no control …

Watching the news this morning, they were discussing an issue that is currently affecting all Panama. The crime is growing so fast every day where the protagonists are the kids.

The laws of this country protect the minors and therefore there is no punishment for those children who commit crimes with illegal guns and are hired to kill precisely because they are immune. When a child grows up in this kind of environment, it is no longer a healthy child, he perfectly understands what he is doing and why. Having examples such as his family and social circle, they learn that and more.
What about the parents? Put aside the cases where parents are also involved in crime. Let’s talk about healthy people who work for minimum wage and come home late at night. They do not have the time to raise their children or spend quality time with them. The question is, why give birth to a child who can not be educated and treated as it should? Why kill a lot of cats to prevent overpopulation when they are completely harmless, but do not control the birth rate of poor people who give birth to creatures which will end up being a danger to our society?
Why not to impose a policy of population control (as in some countries) in neighbourhoods where this is one of the biggest problems? And forget about education .. some people will never learn to use protection if they grew up acting without thinking about consequences. All methods of protection are widely known, they talk about it everywhere .. it’s just that they do not care.

The new fashion trend is to see uniformed and pregnant teenagers. I am totally shocked to see that nowadays they make uniforms for pregnant girls and let them to continue studying in the same institution as if this were the most normal thing ever, giving an example to the other girls. What a shame, so far we’ve come! You got pregnant because you are an ignorant person? You think you’re already old enough to have sex? Then go to work and take care of your child, but don’t poison other girl’s minds (healthy, at least for now). Giving benefits to those people only increases these cases because they feel protected and continue doing what they please. I imagine there are eternally pregnant girls giving birth each year.

Regarding to rape, I am supporting abortion, but there are so many people whom religion has rotten their minds, forcing girls and women to give birth because abortion is a “sin” . Ignorant you people! They have not thought about what will it be of that creature when born and grown up.

We need to apply sanctions and control for these people so they don’t affect the rest of us who struggle to raise our children.

Hello everyone … I opened up this blog six years ago, but only now I’ve decided to keep it active. I am a 30 years old Ukrainian, living in Panama for 21 years.

I studied psychology, not because I would work as a psychologist, but because I wanted to understand how the world actually works, and as far as I know, psychology is applied to each and one of the situations that we live every day whether it is personal, family, work, etc.

I am one of those who think that it is better to know a little of everything, than 100% of a single issue, since you can expand knowledge at any time if necessary. I’ve been lucky to have had the opportunities to learn enough in different areas, not only work, but also personal. This, besides the languages i speak, has opened many doors for me in work and business without having to present a diploma, as my experience is very extensive in several areas such as graphic design, advertising, marketing, sales, administration, banking issues, etc. .. And I keep expanding my knowledge.

Today I’m opening up my company, VIP MultiServices, where I will focus on providing responsible service without any conflicts to clients who have already had enough problems with other companies. Listening to complaints about poor service and fraud, and being one of the victims so many times, I decided to write this blog, analyzing and sharing my experiences, opinions and conclusions about different topics, both positive and negative, which now day affect our coexistence on this planet.

I’m sure that many people around the world will identify with my publications, and at least will not feel alone, as many are afraid to confront and share their experiences.

Let the show begin ..!
